I love perfumes and have a few designer brands sitting on my shelf, but as I’ve learned more about aromatherapy while writing for this website, my expensive bottles remain full because I am addicted to creating my own blends. While I mix them for specific benefits, there is no denying that, overall, I blend them for the scent.
Here are some easy DIY essential oil perfume recipes that you can try right in your own home. When you are done reading the oil perfume recipes below, you may never set foot in a department store’s cosmetics department again.
Now, DIY perfume recipes differ in some ways and are similar in others. We compiled these 21 from around the internet so that you can get an idea of how easy it is to create your own perfume using the natural scents of the essential oils.
Fresh & Kicky
This first recipe is for a solid perfume, which has quite a few steps. You’ll need an appropriate container for this as well.
Ingredients:
- Beeswax
- Carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, olive, grapeseed)
- These essential oils:
- 17 drops grapefruit
- 14 drops ginger
- 10 drops vetiver
Directions:
- Blend your scents
- In a double boiler, melt the beeswax
- Once melted, add the carrier oil
- Remove from heat and add the blend of aromas immediately (the mixture hardens quickly)
- Stir
- Pour into the container
- Let it harden
Once it is hard, you can wear it. This blend should leave your feeling, as the title says, fresh and kicky.
Sensuously Deep
This next recipe is for a solid perfume as well. In fact, it follows the very same steps as the Fresh & Kicky recipe and the ingredients are all the same, except for the essential oils.
Ingredients:
- 20 drops sweet orange
- 15 drops ylang-ylang
- 10 drops cedarwood or sandalwood
Directions:
Just follow the steps for the previous recipe and be sure to remember to blend your scents ahead of time. Otherwise, you risk the mixture hardening before you can get them all in there.
Patchouli-Tangerine Solid Perfume
As you can tell from the title, this recipe is for a solid perfume as well.
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 20 drops patchouli essential oil
- 40 drops tangerine essential oil
- 2 teaspoons beeswax pastilles
Directions:
- Blend jojoba oil and essential oils well but gently
- Test the scent and add more of the scents you want if you feel it needs it
- Melt the beeswax in a heat bath. The instruction is as follow:
a. Place beeswax in a small glass
b. Place in pot with some water
c. Heat water and let beeswax melt
d. Remove pot from heat but leave the glass of melted beeswax in the warm water - Pour the oil blend into the beeswax and mix fast. This is the step that accelerates hardening. Stir gently to remelt while the glass still sits in the hot water
- Pour into your container and let it harden. About 30 minutes is enough.
- Apply and enjoy!
Loveswept Solid Perfume
This solid perfume can be made in the same way as the first two recipes on our list. Just replace the essential oils in those and add these instead.
Ingredients:
Homemade solid perfumes have a shelf life, depending on the carrier oil you decide to use. The rule of thumb is anywhere between 6 months to one year. Make sure to label your creation with the date to use by.
Sensual Woman
Our next recipe follows the rules of using notes. Base, middle, and top notes are where typical scents sit depending on how you decide to use them.
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons (50 ml) carrier oil (jojoba or fractionated coconut)
- 20 drops of the following essential oils
Additional material:
- 50 ml roller-ball or dropper bottle
Directions:
Firstly, put the extracts into the container and then add the carrier. Mix well and let it sit for a while so the oils can infuse into the carrier. Apply and go!
Simple Men’s Blend
As it turns out, wearing scents is not just a female thing. Men like to smell good too so if you are a guy looking for a scent, here you go. If you are a woman wanting a more masculine fragrance, this is for you as well. Or, you could just make it for the masculine person in your life.
Ingredients:
- 10 drops cedarwood
- 6 drops bergamot
- 4 drops sandalwood
Both of these recipes can be cut in half if you need to put it in a smaller container.
Robust Manly Blend
Here we have another recipe that is intended for a man, a person who identifies as masculine, or for that masculine person in your life.

- 3 drops vetiver
- 1 drop ginger
- 1 drop neroli
Directions:
Add all the essential oils to the container and finish it off with your favorite carrier substance. Shake the bottle so the contents mix well.
Forest Fairy
The title of this next blend might sound feminine, but when I look at the scents required, this seems like a more unisex fragrance. That said, this is definitely for the person who isn’t into floral scents since this one focuses more on herby, minty, and citrus aromas.
Ingredients:
- 10 drops sweet orange
- 5 drops cedarwood
- 3 drops peppermint
- 2 drops rosemary
Directions:
Add the aromatherapy scents to the container, then add the carrier oil, shake, and let it sit for infusion.
Calm and De-Stress
Here we have another unisex option. Who doesn’t suffer from stress? The extremely lucky, that’s who. For the rest of us, use the same copycat method following recipe number five but plug in these essential oils instead:
Ingredients:
- 9 drops grapefruit
- 4 drops sweet orange
- 4 drops lavender
- 2 drops clary sage
- 1 drop Roman chamomile
Directions:
Mix well, shake, let sit. Then apply and let the warmth of relaxation take you over via these aromatherapy giants.

Ingredients:
- Grapeseed oil

Warm & Grounding – Good Manly Scent
As a woman, I am glad that the creator of this recipe decided to put in the “manly” part. Not because I don’t like masculine scents but because of the word manly instead of just saying it is meant for men alone.
Everyone has unique tastes and people of all genders like to smell good. Some men like to wear feminine scents and some women like to wear a more masculine aroma. That said, this blend would be a great try for people who fall into the latter category.
Ingredients:
- Grapeseed oil
- The following essential oils:
- 5 drops vetiver
- 3 drops patchouli
- 4 drops cedarwood
Additional materials:
- 10 ml amber glass bottle with rollers
- Rollerball remover
Directions:
Add the scents to the glass bottle and then the grapeseed. Cover and shake, and then let it sit for infusion. These oils give this recipe a musky, woody scent, which appeals to a wide array of people.
